Converged Surveillance Systems: The Future of Security?
One word on every secury expert's tongue lately is convergence. Also known as integration, converged security systems would network surveillance systems with other security systems, and possibly other types of external systems like HVAC, plumbing, and lighting systems. In an integrated surveillance system, everything about a house, a business or a building could be monitored at once.
The visions of integrated surveillance systems put forth by security experts may seem far-fetched and wild because they vary so much and deal with so many aspects. How could they ever be a reality? Some think that "intelligent" surveillance systems that use video analytics could be the answer. These cameras have the stupendous ability to watch for certain occurences from surveillance footage based on a specific set of algorithms. Along with being able to independently observe their settings (a drastic feat in itself), the revolutionary promise of video analytics cameras is having some experts believing that their presence could bring about converged surveillance systems.
An integrated surveillance system has an infinite amount of possibility for securing or observing any area. A homeowner could use an integrated surveillance system to monitor their valuables while they're away while simultaneously making sure that the water, heating and cooling systems are also functioning. A business owner could use a surveillance system with video analytics cameras to record employees as they enter the building and use that data to clock them into the company timekeeping system.
Of course, the first step to reaching integration and converged surveillance systems is developing the technology that will make the dream a reality, but analytics has brought the promise of convergence closer than ever before.
