IP Network Camera Benefits

IP technology is steadily improving, and the benefits of IP network cameras over their analog CCTV predecessors are becoming more apparent.

Wide Reaching Surveillance and Remote Monitoring

In large buildings and facilities with multiple locations, IP surveillance is especially effective. Since each IP camera has its own IP address, the devices are able to communicate over a network. There’s no need for complicated and costly coaxial cabling, and since the cameras can transmit video feeds over the internet, users can monitor video feeds from multiple cameras and sites remotely.

Secure Digital Storage

Storage is another key benefit to IP-based surveillance. While analog CCTV systems rely on cumbersome video cassette tapes for storage, IP systems record footage digitally storing it on network servers or NVRs. Not only does this allow for significantly greater amounts of archived footage, but is also allows for more effective and sophisticated search capabilities. Surveillance footage stored securely on a network server can also be viewed remotely from any PC with network access.

Automated Alerts

IP surveillance systems can be programmed to send automated email alerts to specific designated parties when a threat is detected. This allows for faster response times along with visual evidence if the situation warrants a quick reaction by authorities.

Video Analytics

One of the more recent advancements in IP video technology is in the area of video analytics. IP network cameras are becoming more intelligent and new “smart cameras” are at the forefront of this push. These cameras feature software algorithms designed for such sophisticated functions as behavioral recognition, facial recognition, advanced forms of motion detection, and the detection of other predetermined events.

Integration with Security Systems and Existing Equipment

IP network cameras can be integrated with other security installations such as access control and alarm systems. For those migrating from an analog CCTV system to IP-based surveillance, video encoders and DVRs allow for both analog and digital security cameras to coexist within the same IP surveillance network so existing equipment can still be used during this transition.

Cost Effectiveness

While IP network camera equipment was originally much more expensive than analog equipment, prices are dropping as the technology improves and more options become available. It’s also important to keep in mind that while the initial costs of an IP-based surveillance system might seem steep, the decision to go digital will likely save money in the long run. No additional equipment is required once you’re set up, and there’s no need to continuously buy tapes for storage. Installation and maintenance costs are also significantly less.
