Miami set to install video surveillance system
Miami is the latest in a string of U.S. cities looking to significantly beef up their video security efforts. The new camera system will provide continuous coverage throughout several downtown areas, including the Biscayne Boulevard corridor, the banking district, and the core of the city. The cameras will be monitored 24 hours a day from the police department's communications center.
Miami police officials see the cameras as a "force multiplier," meaning they can expand the reach of the police force beyond what physical officers can see while on duty. The surveillance cameras will be used as a way to speed up police response times, and to detect potential threats before they happen.
Camera installation will occur in five phases, and could take several years to complete. The first phase is being funded by the Department of Homeland Security.
