HomePlug Powerline Alliance and Panasonic push for industry-wide powerline technology standard
Last week, the HomePlug Powerline Alliance revealed the details of a joint proposal submitted with Panasonic to the IEEE P1901 Work Group for Broadband over Powerline (BPL). The proposal outlines a standard for future products based on IEEE P1901 to be fully interoperable with existing HomePlug AV as well as Panasonic HD-PLC products. This collaboration allows the Work Group to define a standard that incorporates both powerline industry leaders, allowing for unification, and steadier growth in the powerline communications industry.
Powerline technology uses existing electrical wiring to form a communications network. This is especially useful in the home because not every room has a phone jack for Ethernet connectivity. With powerline technology, rather than rewiring the house, computers and devices can simply be connected to one another through electrical outlets. In the video surveillance market, one company already using this technology is WiLife. WiLife offers security camera systems that operate using HomePlug powerline technology to transmit video signals from camera to computer by way of existing electrical wiring.
