Switch to IP video puts Bentonville High School at the head of the class

Bentonville High School, in Bentonville, Arkansas, is making the move to IP-based video surveillance in an effort to elevate its level of security. The school, which currently utilizes an analog CCTV surveillance system, will soon install 190 digital security cameras to monitor key areas such as hallways, entrances and exits, and gymnasiums. Once the cameras are installed, the school will be able to reap the many benefits of network surveillance, for instance scalability and remote monitoring.

With the new system, administrators will be able capture, review and monitor video in real time from any network PC. The footage can be viewed by multiple users and stored digitally in an easily searchable format in case specific incidents require detailed visual investigation. The ability to view security camera footage in real-time also improves police reaction time and response. In fact, officers will be able to access the footage over the Internet, so they too will have a clear idea of what's going on before arriving at the scene.

Bentonville has a history of investing in cutting-edge technology, and as the benefits of IP-based surveillance come into focus, more and more schools are taking a similar path. While the initial cost of a system such as Bentonville's might seem high, it's important to note that IP surveillance systems typically have lower installation and maintenance costs than analog systems, and often prove more cost-effective in the long run. Their scalability, which allows for additional cameras to be included without hassle, is another major bonus when it comes to providing comprehensive school surveillance.
