Security Cameras in UK get technology-mandated update
Concerns over footage quality of public CCTV cameras in Britain has mounted a huge campaign for an overhaul of the current surveillance system. Officials want to unify the current CCTV networks - piecemeal combinations of different technologies and quality - to create a new, uniform system with the capability to produce evidence-quality footage for official investigations.
Quality issues with sensitive footage (like that of the 2005 train bombers in transit) have raised concerns with officials about the efficacy of widespread CCTV. Britain has a huge and thorough system of public and private security cameras, with an average of one camera for every twelve people (~5,000,000 cameras).
In order to effectively fight crime, officials claim, security cameras need to be able to produce high quality, clear footage, and have developed a plan that will have effective cameras in place in the next ten to fifteen years.
