Lafayette School Corp. invests in video surveillance to enhance security
Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Ind. is the latest in a long line of schools that are turning to video surveillance in order to increase security for students, faculty and staff. The Lafayette School Corp. held a meeting this week to discuss several security measures, including details on a video surveillance system which will be installed over the summer and operational in time for the beginning of the school year next fall.
Several recent incidents helped to push the surveillance plan to fruition, including a "hit list" found on school grounds, and other threatening messages. Jefferson, like many schools, is hoping that the presence of video surveillance cameras will provide students with an added sense of security, and will deter violence and inappropriate behavior such as fights, bullying and vandalism. While footage from the cameras won't be monitored at all times, school officials plan on accessing the archived recordings to analyze reported incidents. Come next school year, if a fight breaks out, or a student is harassed, there will likely be visual evidence to shed light on the situation in question. Officials are hopeful that the presence of security cameras will help to cut down on the number of incidents all together.
The cameras will be installed in all hallways, outside of bathrooms, in parking lots, and at each entrance to the school.
