Kenora, Ontario moving ahead with municipal surveillance plans
The Kenora City Council has decided it can't wait any longer on its plans to install a municipal video surveillance system that will provide enhanced safety for its residents, visitors, and facilities. Although a decision on funding assistance from the Downtown BIZ association is still up in the air, the council is pushing strongly to move forward with or without the extra financial support.
This anxiousness to get the wheels in motion is fueled further by a series of incidents that some believe could have been avoided with proper video surveillance. Lake of the Woods Cemetery, which has an ongoing history of vandalism, was hit with more recently. Additionally, the city's new transfer station office was broken into over Easter Weekend. The previous office was destroyed by a fire believed to be arson. Residents are also urging the city to improve security for boats and property at the Harbourfront.
In response, the council is making Harbourfront security its top priority and is working feverishly to procure video surveillance for that area, as well as the cemetery and transfer station before carrying out the rest of the downtown surveillance plan.
