Ferry surveillance video introduced in Dashnaw trial
In Plattsburgh, NY, video surveillance footage is playing a significant role in the trial of murder suspect Edward Dashnaw. The 48-year-old Dashnaw faces an 11-count indictment in connection to the murders of David and Lorraine Donivan.
The most recent footage to surface in the case comes courtesy of the ferry system. The Lake Champlain Transportation Co. presented ferry surveillance video to authorities upon the discovery of David Donivan's pickup truck in the Grand Isle ferry parking lot 10 days after his death. Investigators procured four hard drives worth of footage from the Cumberland Head and Grand Isle, VT ticket-booth surveillance cameras. The hard drives were transported to a crime lab in Albany where they were copied and analyzed. Investigators discovered images of a man matching Edward Dashnaw's description purchasing a walk-across ferry ticket. The footage also revealed several instances where Donivan's truck was driven to and from the Grand Isle ferry parking lot after the murders. The clips, which demonstrate the effectiveness of video surveillance in public transportation areas, will undoubtedly be used to link Dashnaw to the murders.
In addition to the ferry surveillance footage, retail security videos have arisen showing fraudulent purchases being made with Donivan's credit card after his murder. At least one witness has identified the man in those videos to be Edward Dashnaw.
The trial is expected to continue through the month.
